I know that our past karma affects our lives in a big way, I don’t really understand the concept of karma. So my question is, why are certain people getting help and others not?

The concept of karma needs to be seen as a wholesome phenomenon. People often relate it only at the individual level. Many times the karma of one individual has effects on larger communities.
It is in this sense, that we often say that the blood of “shaheed” brings life for humanity. Because the karma of one individual “shaheed” brings awakening and becomes the cause of liberty for the coming generation.
Similarly, karma done under the influence of hate brings bad results for others. If a larger community has voted for communal political leaders under the influence of hate, one cannot expect justice and equality from the regime voted in power.
