It is very normal to think about the past. Past memories keep haunting us. It happens to all of us. You need to work on your mind and learn to control your mind. You need to give directions to your mind and not let the mind give you the directions. It is training and you need to train your mind. Also, listen to the meaning of Gurbani you will get many directions in your life.

ਚਿੰਤਾ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਜੋ ਅਨਹੋਨੀ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਇਹੁ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥੫੧॥ ਜੋ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਸੋ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਹੈ ਪਰੋ ਆਜੁ ਕੈ ਕਾਲਿ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਲੇ ਛਾਡਿ ਸਗਲ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥੫੨॥ (੧੪੨੯)
When we study Gurbani with full understanding and try to apply in our practical life. Then our mode of thinking changes and we start following the right path according to the Hukam of Akal Purkh.
This automatically reduces our anxiety and other tensions. Instead of following the mind one starts controlling the mind.
However any ritual recitation is not going to help much. Though the rituals does give us the feeling that we have performed our duty, but in the long run this does not help much. However regular reading does help us in improving our reading provided we pay attention to that.
