Respected Anonymous ji
You have written that you don’t know Gurbani but like to listen to Kirtan.
In Gurmat, singing praises of Akal Purakh with raag is called Kirtan. There is a Hukman in Gurbani.
Just by listening to the praises of Akal Purakh, the hostile opposition of the mind is eliminated. It means that listening to Gurbani brings peace to the mind. If you listen to Gurbani mindfully, the mind gets peace.
Because
ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਮੀਠੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰ ॥
Gurbani is nectar / Amrit, so of course, you don’t even understand Gurbani, but if you get relief by listening Kirtan then recognize that there is a fountain of nectar / Amrit in your mind. Only by listening , a person walks on the side of the believer. Man wants peace of mind in his life. If you are getting peace of mind by listening to Gurbani, then this is the biggest benefit.
Dear Brother/Sister,
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!
Further to the beautiful reply of learned sister Mandeep Kaur ji, I just want to bring to your kind notice the following two lines from Guru Granth Sahib:-
ਕਹਤ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਾਏ ਚੂਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥ ਕਹਤ ਸੁਣਤ ਸਭੇ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਨਤ ਪਾਹਿ ਨਿਧਾਨਾ ॥੪॥੪॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 797}
As per my understanding, all those who recite or listen Gurbani will get benefitted but he/she who changes his/her life, as per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, will receive the treasure. Changing life is most important because then only one will progress further to achieve the goal of ‘Jeevan Mukat ‘, in this life itself. Otherwise, he/she may continue to sit in KG class and not progress further.
Regards,
Your Brother
