NANAK was most respectfully called GURU because his enlightened consciousness and divine wisdom. Nanak had the foresight that message of GURBANI need to continue. This responsibility was then given to BHAI LEHNA who was called GURU ANGAD and so on. This process culminated in SGGSJI.

The same Jyot was present in each Guru Sahib. Hence, the criteria was only the capability and wisdom for deciding the next Guru.
