Identifying a raag is a holistic process — to internalise its swaroop, have a mental model of it and then compare it with what the musician sings. This can be done only by an experienced listener, who has heard a raag several times and is familiar with several kirti in it. It is not possible for every listener to undergo in formal course.
To consider whether the alap reminds one of any song along with its raga that one is familiar with.
The second tip is to recognise phrases characteristic of a raga . This needs a higher level of musical knowledge .
The third tip is to recognise a raga by its aroh and avroh ,This requires not only a knowledge of the aroh and avroh of several raag but also swars to decipher the aroh and avroh from an alap. This is not always easy as in an alap some swaras may be skipped in some phrases.
The fourth tip is to recognise the swara varieties occurring in the raga.
The identity of the raga in the initial stages, these may be difficult to apply unless the listener is quite experienced.
