How can I express gratitude to my partner's dying father, wish him peace, and support the grieving family?

In response to your question, the undersigned wants to draw your attention to the fact that as per Gurbani, everything happens, as per divine law (ਹੁਕਮ, ਰਜ਼ਾ, ਭਾਣਾ). Please read the following Pauri and its meanings from the Vaar of Third Guru Person Guru Amardas Sahib, which is located at Pannas 508 to 524 of Guru Granth Sahib:-

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਤਿਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਹੋਵਣਾ ॥ ਜਹ ਜਹ ਰਖਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਤਹ ਜਾਇ ਖੜੋਵਣਾ ॥ ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੈ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਧੋਵਣਾ ॥ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਖੋਵਣਾ ॥ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਜੋਨਿ ਨ ਜੋਵਣਾ ॥ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਇਕੁ ਨੈਣ ਅਲੋਵਣਾ ॥ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਰੋਵਣਾ ॥ ਨਾਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਪਰੋਵਣਾ ॥੧੮॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 523}

ਅਰਥ: (ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਥੇ ਜਿਥੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਓਥੇ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵ) ਜਾ ਖਲੋਂਦੇ ਹਨ; ਜੋ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿੰਦੇ) ਹਨ ਉਹ ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤ ਧੋ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੇ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ! ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਤੇ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ, ਅੰਦਰ ਬਾਹਰ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਉਹ ਇਕ (ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੀ) ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਦੇ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਗੋਂ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ (ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰੋਈ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।੧੮।

PAUREE: As is the Hukam of Your Command, so do things happen. Wherever You keep me, there I go and stand. With the Love of Your Name, I wash away my evil-mindedness. By continually meditating on You, O Formless Lord, my doubts and fears are dispelled. Those who are attuned to Your Love, shall not be trapped in reincarnation. Inwardly and outwardly, they behold the One Lord with their eyes. Those who recognize the Lord’s Command never weep. O Nanak, they are blessed with the gift of the Name, woveni nto the fabric of their minds. ||18||

The Pauri makes it very clear that everything happened or will happen as per divine law.

Further, as per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, the physical death has to come to everyone. The Guru teaches us that ‘ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ।। means ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਣਾ ਮਰਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਤੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ।। The Guru, however, teaches us to rise above the fright of physical death.

Please be kind to read the following stanza from a Shabad of Kabir ji at Panna 654 of Guru Granth Sahib in which he is guiding us to rise above the fright of death:-

ਪਰਿਓ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਭੈ ਜਗ ਊਪਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਜਨ ਭਏ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਿਹ ਜਾਨੀ ॥੪॥੩॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 654}

ਅਰਥ: ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਕਾਲ ਦਾ ਸਹਿਮ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਭਰਮੀ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਭੀ ਉਸੇ ਹੀ ਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਖੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ (ਉਹ ਭੀ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹਨ) । ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ! ਆਖ-ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਸਮਝ ਲਈ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਮ ਤੋਂ) ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ।੪।੩।

Further, the undersigned wants to say that the situation in which you are in, you and your dear ones can only perform Ardas for your dying relative, because the Guru teaches us:-

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਕਰਿ ॥ ਛੋਡਿ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਸਗਲ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਧਰਿ ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 519)

ਅਰਥ: (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਦਿਲ ਦਾ ਜੋ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੋਵੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਅਗੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰ, ਆਪਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਹ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰ ਦੇਹ।

Perhaps, you may be aware that a Sikh performs Ardas, to seek blessings of Akalpurakh, to remain in Chardi Kala. If you remain in Chardi Kala then you will be able to help your dear ones also to remain in Chardi Kala.
