In the battle at Chamkaur, forty Sikhs fought with a large army of Mughals and Hill Hindu Rajas. The figure of ten lakh army should be read as a large army because no one could have counted the numbers.
The undersigned will like to further add that the Tenth Nanak, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, in verses 19 to 41 of Zafarnama (Letter of victory written to Aurangzeb), has written the account of Battle of Chamkaur, fought on 22nd December, 1704, indicating the reasons that forced him to take to the sword. In verse 19, Guru Sahib has written as under:
“What could forty hungry persons do, when suddenly ten lac strong army came upon them? (Here ten lac has been used in a poetic sense and means ‘huge numbers’ as Guru ji has again referred to the number of army forces as ‘beshumaar in verse 41.”
In verse 41 Guru Sahib has written:
“And finally what the bravery (of my warriors) could do when countless (Beshumaar) fell on these men.”
So, the figure of ten lakh army should be read as countless army.
As regards beheading of Sees of Five beloved ones, there are many stories, which fail, when the touch stone of Gurbani is applied, since there is no place of miracles in the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib and everything is as per Divine Law (Hukam). The aim was to test the dedication/devotion and determination/steadfastness of the Sikhs in which Five Beloved Ones and later many more succeeded.
Therefore, nothing like beheading of Sees of Five Beloved Ones happened. What actually happened was that a new attire and a new thought was given to the Five beloved ones so that they become Sant Sipahis.
Later, many more became became Sant Sipahis and were successful, in shaking the roots of well entrenched Mughal Empire, under the able leadership of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. After his martyrdom in June, 1716, the Sikhs remained, on the saddles of horses for almost ninety years, and after defeating Ahmad Shah Abdali, finally Sikh Kingdom came into existence, under Maharaja Ranjeet Singh.
