      Further to the answer given by respected Kulwinder Singh, Just as to program a computer one has to format its previous programming, to get guru’s Sikhi (the art of living a blissful life), one has to first format the previous programming of one’s mind. One has to leave the old notions and come to the Guru with dedication to learn the art of living a blissful life.
      There is a testimony of Guru Sahib in which Guru Sahib said SIKHI UPAR SIKHI NAHIN TIKDI ” Clean your vessel before going to take milk “. This was its underlying meaning.
      Result: Only by letting go of my old thoughts can I learn the art of living a blissful life from the Guru.

        In reply to what learned brother, Sardar Karnail Singh, has said, the undersigned wants to say that you can slowly and steadily adopt the Sikh way of life, as per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, and in due course of time, the earlier programming will get formatted.

      Respected Brother/Sister,
      Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

      1. In response to your question, the undersigned wants to say that First Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib is and will remain always with us, because he had made it very clear, in his discussion with Yogis,
      that his Guru was Shabad, when he said Shabad Guru Surat Dhun Chela (ਸਬਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਚੇਲਾ). Therefore, his teachings are always with us in Shabad form.

      2. In Sikhism, the body of First Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib and his successors was not Guru, but Shabad has been and will remain the ever living Guru of Sikhs. This was ordained by Tenth Guru Person, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, when he closed the lineage of living Gurus and declared Guru Granth Sahib as ever living Guru of Sikhs.

      3. As per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, Sikh” is a “Seeker of Truth” and “Sikhism” stands for:-

      (i) Oneness of Humanity;
      (ii) No discrimination owing to gender, race, caste, creed, or color;
      (iii) No empty rituals & worthless religious practices;
      (iv) No life after death theories. Rather, it stands for salvation/emancipation, during the life time on getting rid of vices.

      4. Further, Sikhism:-

      (i) teaches a Sikh to live his life in the present, as per Hukam of Akalpurakh and teachings of ever living Guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib;
      (ii) expects a Sikh to earn an honest living, remain connected with Akalpurakh all the time and share his honest earning with poor and needy;
      (iii) expects a Sikh to be compassionate, kind, tolerant and is to love all i e. he is to reach the mental state of seeing Akalpurakh in everyone and hence having friends only and no enemies;
      (iv) expects a Sikh to serve the humanity, without any distinction of caste, creed and religion.

      5. Guru Granth Sahib teaches a person/Sikh to get rid of vices and become a righteous/virtuous person. Imbibing the above teachings, of Guru Granth Sahib, is what is called Sikh way of life and you can very well adopt the same.

      6 Hope it helps. If you have any further questions, please do ask. If you find any deficiencies, please point out the same, for improvement in future.

      Regards,
      Your Brother
