      First GURU make one a complete godly being. GURU says POORA PRABH ARADIA POORA JA KA NAU. NANAK POORA PAYA POORE KE GUNN GAU. GURU says realizing the divine within make you divine, complete GURMUKH, SACHIARA. This is the identity of of a SIKH. Yes after taking KHANDE DEE PAHUL one becomes KHALSA,

      ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਯੋਗ ਭੈਣ ਨਿੱਕੀ ਕੌਰ ਜੀ,
      ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫ਼ਤਹਿ।।

      You have asked a question as to how does Gurbani contribute to the development and expression of Sikh identity?

      As understood by the undersigned, Sikh is a Seeker of Truth and is a student. By imbibing teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, he has to become a Khalsa i.e. Akalpurakh’s own. Perhaps, you may be aware that Khalsa is a Persian word which means King’s own land.

      Please be kind to read the following stanza from a Shabad of Kabir ji at Panna 654 of Guru Granth Sahib in which he is guiding us to rise above the fright of death:-

      ਪਰਿਓ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਭੈ ਜਗ ਊਪਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥ ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਜਨ ਭਏ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਿਹ ਜਾਨੀ ॥੪॥੩॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 654}
      ਅਰਥ: ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਉੱਤੇ ਕਾਲ ਦਾ ਸਹਿਮ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਭਰਮੀ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਭੀ ਉਸੇ ਹੀ ਲੇਖੇ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਖੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ (ਉਹ ਭੀ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹਨ) । ਹੇ ਕਬੀਰ! ਆਖ-ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਸਮਝ ਲਈ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਮ ਤੋਂ) ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ।੪।੩।

      The Guru, therefore, is teaching a Sikh to rise above the fright of physical death and become a Khalsa i.e. Akalpurakh’s own. Once the Sikh become Akalpurakh’s own then Akalpurakh will always be with him and he will not do anything which will lead to his Spiritual Death. In a way, the Sikh has to live a disciplined life, as per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib. As understood by the undersigned, as per the Gurbani, this is what immortality is. This is what the Sahibzadas and other martyrs achieved and became immortal for all times to come (ਅਮਰ‌ ਹੋ ਗਏ).

      Now coming to maintaining the Sikhi Saroop, which is important for Sikh identity, please read two Pangtis of Shabad of Fifth Guru Person Guru Arjun Sahib in Raag Maru, which is located at Panna 1083-84 of Guru Granth Sahib. In this Guru Sahib is teaching us that one is not to disturb the saroop given by Akalpurakh. Rather, keeping it as it is a way to get respect.

      Hope this helps. If you have any further questions please do ask. If you find any deficiencies please point out the same for improvement in the future.

      Regards,
      Your Brother

      ਨਾਪਾਕ ਪਾਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ਹਦੀਸਾ ਸਾਬਤ ਸੂਰਤਿ ਦਸਤਾਰ ਸਿਰਾ ॥੧੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1084}

      ਪਦ ਅਰਥ: ਸਾਬਤ ਸੂਰਤਿ = (ਸੁੰਨਤਿ, ਲਬਾਂ ਕੱਟਣ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਹ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਉਂ ਕਾ ਤਿਉਂ ਰੱਖਣਾ। ਦਸਤਾਰ ਸਿਰਾ = ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਦਸਤਾਰ (ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ) , ਇੱਜ਼ਤ-ਆਦਰ ਦਾ ਵਸੀਲਾ ਹੈ।12।

      ਅਰਥ: (ਸੁੰਨਤਿ, ਲਬਾਂ ਕਟਾਣ ਆਦਿਕ ਸ਼ਰਹ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੀ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਉਂ ਕਾ ਤਿਉਂ ਰੱਖ = ਇਹ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ-ਆਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਵਸੀਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।12।
