Getting closer to waheguru ji

‌‌CHARDI KALA (ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲ੍ਹਾ)

Chardi Kala (ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲ੍ਹਾ) is an important expression used in Sikhism for a mind frame that a Sikh has to accept and practice. It loosely means a “positive, buoyant and optimistic” attitude towards life and the future. Always be in “high spirits”, “ever progressive”, “always cheerful”, etc are some other terms used to describe this phrase. It reflects an eternally evergreen & blissful mental state of a Sikh.

Sikhism dictates that Sikhs believe in the Will of God (ਭਾਣਾ) and that God is without enemies (ਨਿਰਵੈਰ) and is always merciful. Hence acceptance of his Will is in the interest of and for the benefit of His Creation, even if at times one suffers severe hardship. This attitude of “Chardi Kala” is to allow one to sail through the ups and downs of life with as little harm as possible to the individual. To join and help others in their hour of need is part of this “Chardi Kala” spirit.

The Sikhs are a unique spirit-born people believing in Guru Nanak’s basic concepts of “Work, Worship and Charity” (ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰੋ, ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ, ਵੰਡ ਛਕੋ) and “Gurmukh, Naam, Daan, Ishnan (ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ).” Naam refers to the Power, the Energy, the Universal Cosmic Life Force and the vibrant manifestation of God in creation.

In Chardi Kala there is confidence in the ultimate victory of Truth over falsehood and of Good over evil (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫ਼ਤਹਿ) Abiding Cheerfulness is its hallmark – “Nanak Naam Charhdi Kala, Tere Bhane Sarbatt da Bhalaa” (ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲ੍ਹਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਸਰਬੱਤ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ)।

Courage is that state or quality of mind and spirit which enables one to face dangers with self-possession and resolution. Discipline resulting from training that leads to controlled behavior, mentally and morally, is also an essential constituent of Chardi Kala. Perpetual readiness to act is another – he pursues the ideals he cherishes, makes no noise over a good deed, and proceeds to another. Kala also means “fine art”, so actions in Chardi Kala become characterized by elegance and gracefulness. It also means playing a winning “Game” according to the accepted rules of the game.

To remain in Chardi Kala, in my opinion, one has to listen to the following teaching of Guru Sahib in Sukhmani Sahib and practice it day in and day out:-

ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ॥ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਪੇਖੁ ॥ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥ ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਉਤਰੈ ਚਿੰਦ ॥ ਆਸ ਅਨਿਤ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਤਰੰਗ ॥ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੰਗ ॥ ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਹੁ ॥ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰਹੁ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਧਨ ਕੇ ਭਰਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ॥੧॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 295}

ਅਰਥ: (ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਸੁਣ, ਤੇ, ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੂੰ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਨੇੜੇ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ।
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਦੰਮ-ਬ-ਦੰਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ, (ਤਾਂ ਜੁ) ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਏ।
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਨਿੱਤ ਨਾਹ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ (ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਆਸਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਹਰਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਹ, ਅਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਕ ਮੰਗ।
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ) ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ, (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਅੱਗ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪੀ ਧਨ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਭਰ ਲੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਕਰ।1।
