HI i am a cross cultural spiritual seeker, i wanted to know the significance and purpose of the sort of swatter that is waved at service and i also know of a local store keep who seems to have one behind the counter??

There is a reference to the swatter Sri Guru Granth Sahib and it is a sign of respect for the entity being served. The use of swatter is traditional / Cultural and from times way before Guru Sahib.
For the Sikh Community, Sri Guru Granth Sahib is the entity worthy of all the respect and use of swatter is one among many ways to respect Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
