Yes, it’s advise from Guru Nanak Dev Ji not to indulge with fools and waste your time
You already know the straight forward answer. I guess your question is why?
As best as I understand Gurbani message, one is to concentrate on ੴ and live a life of a SACHIAR. Spending any time away from ੴ is a waste. And arguing with someone who is not willing to listen to this philosophy is a time misspent.
In start of this verse the mention is about most people being egotists and everyone will face the consequence of their own deeds. This life is transitory so why have an Ego. There is no reason to label anyone wrong/bad and there is no reason argue with a disagreeable. Implying that it would be time misspent, away from contemplation on the ੴ (IKKO, THE ONE).
Veer ji has very nicely explained that the most important point is that one should not have Ego or ਹਉਮੈ।
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਕੋ ਹੀ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਹਉਮੈ ਖਤਮ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਹੈ ੴ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ :
।।ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਗਵਾਇਦਾ।।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ 1034
