It is true that many Sikhs believe in Heaven and Hell, but Sikhi (Gurbani) does not.
Gurbani does give reference to not only Swarg and Nark as popularized by the Brahmanical faith but also of Bahisht and Dojak as per Islamic faith. But due to the Brahmanical tilt of our interpretations, many Sikhs believe in Brahmanical re-birth, but not in Islamic kyaamat (resurrection). Whereas the use of the terms in Gurbani is only for reference purposes. Gurbani, a number of times, discards the imaginary concepts of re-birth and that of kyaamat. Gurbani gives a unique concept of ‘Jeevan Mukt’ which is free from Heaven, Hell, re-birth, or resurrection. ‘Jeevan Mukt’ in itself is a powerful concept that talks of this present life and rejects all other mythical beliefs.

I agree with other answers that Gurmat does not believe in hell and heaven after death.
AGGS 969

The Guru (Sant) rejects both hell and heaven. By the Grace of my Guru I have no obligation to either of them. By the grace of the Guru (Guru’s spiritual teachings and wisdom) I am now truthful in my life. The God and Kabir have become one. No one can tell them apart.
Heaven is now while living when I live a life of Sachiare (Truthful) and hell when I am engrossed in Maya (Kam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh, Ahankar).
For more clarification, listen to my youtube.
Thank you
Please read the book from Manmukh to Gurmukh by Bhai Rama – He has given explicit vision / description of hell.
Same description is in a photo kept at a sikh museum in England I believe.
Read Se Kinehya. Sant Baba Harnaam Simgh Rampurkhera. Given description of hell. Read and listen to bachans of contemprary brahmgyanis, saints and read Gurbani. Its gives exact descriptiom of hell for varous sins. Read dasam granth bani.
The advise given here is wrong in the utmost sense.
Heaven and hell are human created assumptions, not fact, to exploit common people. The religious cheaters use as reward of heaven and punishment in hell to loot congregations. Gurbani says you are in heaven when one with truth and in hell when separated from truth here and now.
Are you implying that our Gurus cheated us?
There is so much mention of heaven and hell in Gurbani. For example Guru Arjan says SGGS 182. Is he cheating us?
What is hell, and what is heaven? The Saints reject them both.
I think you missed this, couple lines after the line you quoted.
and:
Kabeer, I have been spared from heaven and hell, by the Grace of the True Guru.
RavalBath Ji,
I have not only taken and studied the verses you quoted but many more. See the Note 11 in book at link given. The answers lie therein.
In your quoted second verse, Kabir says clearly that I HAVE BEEN SPARED FROM HEAVEN AND HELL … He believes there is HEAVEN and HELL and that he has been spared from HEAVEN and HELL. By your own quoted verse, you are supporting the existence of HEAVEN and HELL.
The firsrt verse: The Saints has done the right things that HEAVEN and HELL has been rid for them, meaning they don’t have to go to HEAVEN and HELL. And if you read and understand the next verse it tells how the Saints are rid of HEAVEN and HELL … how? …. the Grace of Guru. Where did Kabir says there is no HEAVEN and HELL? Further this first verse you quoted is supported by the second verse.
This besides the point can you respond to my question that I posed to Kandola Sahib. I repeat
There is so much mention of heaven and hell in Gurbani. For example Guru Arjan says SGGS 182. Is he cheating us?
Looking forward to you response.

yes indeed.. the gurus and sains mention many times about heaven and hell… doesnt mean they support it.. what they meant about heaven and hell is good karam and bad karam…. that is the real heaven and hell.. if u enjoy ur life.. its heaven.. if u suffer that is hell.. it is all karma
I agree withu.
the gurus mention many stuff about hell and heaven.. but doesnt mean we sikhs belief in hell and heaven… we can experience them while alive.. waheguru will never let is suffer in hell fire becoz he loves us very much.. even if we are suffering on earth is not becoz of waheguru.. its becoz our ownself as we do bad things and karma hits us.. to stay from suffering we must follow the gurus teachings and do good deeds
I don’t understand the idea of karma. I know that it literally means that which you sow, you shall reap, but I don’t understand how this explains beliefs such as reincarnation.
What if someone has a miserable life but is doing all the right things? Are they just unlucky? Do they not have enough good karma?
I do know a little about karma and reincarnation but the differences between hinduism, buddhism and sikhism understandings of it are more that I can understand. By the way I am from an Abrahamic religious background if that helps
in sikhism.. we belief and past life.. maybe in your past life u have done many mistake and karma is hitting you in the present life.. if u do good in your past life or present life you shall get good karma.. if u do bad things in this life or the past life.. you shall get bad karma… if ur doing good in this life but getting hit by karma doesnt mean you are bad in the present life.. maybe you did mistake in the past life and now the karma is hitting you in present life.. hope it helps..
For extra clarification, Abrahamic religions don’t believe in reincarnation. They believe in a Final Judgment and then go to heaven or hell. Ideas vary between different religions (Christianity vs Islam for example) and even sects.
Hope that helps. A basic explanation of reincarnation, karma, and how this relates to Sikhism is probably what I need in order to understand.
according to sikhism… our religion is the final and complete truth… but the main teaching is to bond with waheguru and follow to satguru teaching… doesnt mean u must be a sikh to do this.. u can be an islam or any other religion as well.. just as Guru Nanak said.. “na koi hindu, na koi musliman… there is no hindu or muslim.. what guru sahib meant was.. God doesnt care about religion.. u can be any religion but u must worship ik onkar
no we don’t
never
No, Sikhs don’t believe in heaven or hell.
As per Gurbani, people talk about heaven and hell. BUt who knows where they are. Implying it is all made up stuff and no one hase gone there and come back to tell about it.
( Page:
Guru Granth Sahb BANI furhter states that heaven is right here in company of BHAGATS.
Aren’t you comments contradictory. First you say that heaven and hell is made up stuff. Then you say heaven is here in the company of the saints. Is the company of the saints nade up stuff?

Yes,
Hell and Heaven do exist, BUT Gursikhs don’t bother about getting into any of them. Liberation / Getting united with God is the objective of Gursikhs. Upon liberation, everything destroys,(all accounts are closed) ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਦਰਿ ਕਾਗਦ ਫਾਰੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਖਾ ਸਮਝਾ, you lose your identity and get assimilated into God. So, the question of getting into heaven or hell is meaningless for saints.
Hell is Heaven is not valid for Saints, i.e ONLY AFTER LIBERATION, but those who aren’t liberated yet still carries the Karma, and Heaven and Hell exist till then.
Meaning: Saints reject “DISCUSSING/UNDERSTANDING” Heaven or Hell.
Again Yes! Hell exists
I am new to gurbani and Sikhism but it seems from the varied answers that ‘belief’ is unique to the individuals interpretation and Sikhi teaches us that experience is more important than belief. If what you interpret or believe is going to enable you to have a more personal and closer relationship with Waheguru, your life now on Earth in this body and your experience and connection to Waheguru and what will make you a better human I would think is far more important than knowing what happens when you die. Knowledge just build the ego. Experience is what will bring you to Waheguru.
The ppl commenting here are born in West and trying to comment on a faith started in the East. They are giving complete wrong interpretation of Gurbani which suited to satsfying their own racist hinduphobic agenda. Some are scholarly / intellect minded.
Yes Sikhs believes in heaven & hell, There also exists different devi devtaਸ.. there names and memtion is throughout Gurbani. We dont wirship them, but they do exist.
Heaven & Hell is temporary and there are many levels if heaven & hell. According to your karms you get next birth as ordered by Dharam Raaj. Just as maat-lok (planet Earth) is a realm there are many hellish & heavenly realms.
You must have heard of 72 virgins as claimed by Muslims. This is indr-lok where apsaras live. This is also mentioned in Gurbani in JapJi “Gaveh tydhno mohnia mun mohan”. Same also mentioned in Buddhism in one sakhi when Buddha showed Ananda a realm where beautiful women existed.
So just as Earth is one realm, there are many different hellish & heavnly realms. Just as physical is one type of life form. Ghosts and spirits is also a life forms.
no
Heaven and hell are states of mind or simply your lifestyle, character and personality that determine your mental state.
Gurbani espouses the concept of heaven and hell and one more stage. Please download file at LINK. Read Note 11. Also search for keywords “heaven” and “hell” to read comments in the book. You can ask for clarifacions in the book at the links provided on page ii.
