Do I have to keep my hair and be vegetarian to be a Sikh? I grew up hearing about punishments for not following rehat, which makes me feel guilt and shame, like I’m not enough. Christianity feels more open, with similar teachings but fewer conditions. If there’s only one God, why different paths? My family insists I must follow Sikhi because I was born into it, but I feel confused—will Sikh God punish me for not keeping rehat?

      Respected Brother,

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

In response to your question, the undersigned wants to say that as understood by the undersigned, a Sikh is a Seeker of Truth and is a student. By imbibing the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, he has to become a Khalsa i.e. Akalpurakh’s own. Perhaps, you may be aware that Khalsa is a Persian word, which means King’s own land.

Please read two Pangtis of Shabad of Fifth Guru Person Guru Arjun Sahib in Raag Maru, which is located at Panna 1083-84 of Guru Granth Sahib. In this Guru Sahib is teaching us that one is not to disturb the saroop given by Akalpurakh to us. Rather, keeping it as it is, is a way to get respect.

Now, the person who cuts hair and shaves beard, has not imbibed the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib and has failed as a student. Therefore, can he/she be called a Sikh? In undersigned’s opinion the answer is no.

Further, he/she will keep on fighting with Akalpurakh also, in his/her entire life. By doing so,‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌ can he/she become Akalpurakh’s own i.e. a Khalsa? So, he/she will be neither here nor there. Please think about it.

Therefore, as understood by the undersigned, a Sikh has to maintain both Sikhi Saroop, as also Character, so that the onlookers can see Guru in him/her.

As regards the situation in which you are in, you have to be very patient and cool and instead of taking a hasty decision, you may analyze all pros and cons before arriving at a decision.

May Akalpurakh bless you with Chardi Kala, to enable you to remain in Guru’ Hukam! This is our Ardas to Him!

I hope it helps. If you have any further questions please do ask. If you find any deficiencies please point out the same for improvement in the future.

      Regards,

      Your Brother

      ਨਾਪਾਕ ਪਾਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ਹਦੀਸਾ, ਸਾਬਤ ਸੂਰਤਿ ਦਸਤਾਰ ਸਿਰਾ।।੧੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1084}

      ਪਦ ਅਰਥ: ਸਾਬਤ ਸੂਰਤਿ = (ਸੁੰਨਤਿ, ਲਬਾਂ ਕੱਟਣ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਹ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਉਂ ਕਾ ਤਿਉਂ ਰੱਖਣਾ। ਦਸਤਾਰ ਸਿਰਾ = ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਦਸਤਾਰ (ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ) , ਇੱਜ਼ਤ-ਆਦਰ ਦਾ ਵਸੀਲਾ ਹੈ।12।

      ਅਰਥ: (ਸੁੰਨਤਿ, ਲਬਾਂ ਕਟਾਣ ਆਦਿਕ ਸ਼ਰਹ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਆਪਣੀ ਸ਼ਕਲ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਉਂ ਕਾ ਤਿਉਂ ਰੱਖ = ਇਹ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ-ਆਦਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਵਸੀਲਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।12।

        Respected Brother/Sister,

Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

In response to your question, the undersigned further wants to say that, as per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, Akalpurakh lives in every living being, as what we call ‘Atma’ and with the strength given by Him, the body functions. As soon as the strength is withdrawn, the physical death takes place and the five elements, of which the body is composed of, merge with the five elements and the Atma merges with Akalpurakh. Thus, nothing is left. No one knows as to what happens to Atma after that.

Please read the following Stanza of a Shabad of Fourth Guru Person, Guru Ramdas Sahib, in which he is guiding us that Akalpurakh is all pervasive i.e. everywhere in water, earth and every living being:-

This above teaching is universally applicable to all and no distinction is made, in respect of sinners or anyone else. Those who commit sins, suffer during their life time itself, because the Gurbani teaches us ‘As you sow, so shall you reap.

Further, the undersigned wants to request you to please read the following Pauri and its meanings. There are more Shabads on the subject in Guru Granth Sahib. It is very clear that Akalpurakh takes full care of us and doesn’t even remember our shortcomings, what to say of our sins:-

        ਪਉੜੀ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਕ ॥ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇ ਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਬਾਲਕ ॥ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਖਿਲਾਇਦਾ ਨਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਆਲਕ ॥ ਅਉਗਣੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਚਿਤਾਰਦਾ ਗਲ ਸੇਤੀ ਲਾਇਕ ॥ ਮੁਹਿ ਮੰਗਾਂ ਸੋਈ ਦੇਵਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਇਕ ॥ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਉਪਿਓਨੁ ਇਸੁ ਸਉਦੇ ਲਾਇਕ ॥ ਸਾਝੀ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਬਹਾਲਿਆ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇਕ ॥ ਮੈ ਨਾਲਹੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜੈ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਭਨਾ ਗਲਾ ਲਾਇਕ ॥੨੧॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1101}

        ਅਰਥ: ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਹੈ (ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਪਾਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਸੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਹਾਂ। ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰੀ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਨ-ਖੇਡ ਖਿਡਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਗੱਲੋਂ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ) ਆਲਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ। ਮੇਰੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਔਗੁਣ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦਾ, (ਸਦਾ) ਆਪਣੇ ਗਲ ਨਾਲ (ਮੈਨੂੰ) ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਮੈਂ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਖ-ਦਾਈ ਪਿਤਾ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਹੀ ਉਹੀ ਦੇ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਦੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ ਸੌਂਪ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸੌਦਾ ਵਿਹਾਝਣ ਦੇ ਲਾਇਕ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਭਾਈਵਾਲ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, (ਹੁਣ) ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਮੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ ਬਣ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਤਾ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਿਛੁੜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈ। 21।

Therefore, He has no system of giving punishment to His children for their mistakes/shortcomings or sins.

        Please read this also:-

So, please get rid of any thoughts that Akalpurakh gives punishment for any one’s mistakes/ shortcomings or sins. Only thing is that one suffers during life time itself for his/her wrongs/sins.

Further, one has to change life, get rid of vices, live a disciplined life, become a righteous/virtuous person, be one with Akalpurakh and Shabad Guru, who are spiritually embodiment of each other, so as to achieve the stage of spiritual equipoise and spiritual bliss. Final goal is to achieve emancipation/salvation, during this life time.

Hope it helps. If you have any further questions, please do ask. If you find any deficiencies, please point out the same, for improvement in future.

        Regards,

        Your Brother

          Respected Brother/Sister,
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

About being vegetarian, please click on the link below and read page 30 of the Sikh Rehat Maryada:-

          https://sgpc.net/?page_id=653

You can see under the heading ‘Amrit Sanskar’ that eating ‘Kutha (Halal meat i.e. meat prepared in Muslim way)’ is prohibited. However, eating Jhatka meat is allowed. Why? No one knows because no reason is given.

As regards Gurbani, the Baani of the First Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib, at Pannas 1289-1290 of Guru Granth Sahib, clearly indicates that eating meat has nothing to do with the religion. At Panna 16 of Guru Granth Sahib, the First Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib makes it very clear that one should not eat that food, which doesn’t suit the body and/or results in bad thoughts in the mind.

Therefore, as per teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, eating meat is a matter of choice and suitability and is not a subject for discussion.

Hope it helps. If you have any further questions, please do ask. If you find any deficiencies, please point out the same, for improvement in future.

Khalsa word originated from persian word ‘Khalis’, which means ‘Pure’ and does not mean King’s own land. Where did you hear that?

In the context of historical land ownership, “Khalsa land” refers to land directly owned and managed by the state, or the emperor, as opposed to land granted to individuals or institutions (jagirs).

          Here’s a more detailed explanation:

          Definition:
Khalsa land, also sometimes referred to as “Khalisa land,” signifies land that was under the direct control and management of the ruling authority, like the Mughal emperor, during the Mughal and Sultanate periods.
          Contrast with Jagir Land:

Khalsa land was distinct from “Jagir land,” which was land granted to individuals or institutions (like nobles or religious institutions) in exchange for services or revenue obligations to the state.

          Revenue Collection:
The revenue collected from Khalsa land was directly deposited into the emperor’s treasury, whereas revenue from Jagir land was used to support the grantees.

          Examples:
During the Mughal empire, the land owned directly by the emperor was called Khalsa land.
The land under the direct management of the State (Darbar) was known as Khalsa.

          Khalsa in Sikhism:
In Sikhism, the term “Khalsa” refers to the community of initiated Sikhs, and the observance of the Five K’s was originally the mark of the Khalsa.
