How did the universe come into existence? Is there a creator, or is it a natural process?

In response to your question, about creation of universe, according to science, the universe was created out of nothing.

The scientists hold the opinion that all matter- the stars and galaxies were once concentrated into a very hot, dense matter. This matter expanded so rapidly that it exploded with a Big Bang. In so doing, it cooled down enabling nuclei, then atoms and finally much later galaxies, stars and planets to condense out of it. According to the scientists the Universe came out from vacuum. The entire Universe is a re-expression of sheer nothingness.

(a) Now let us try to understand about creation of universe as per Gurbani:-

1. What was the situation before creation of universe, as per Guru Granth Sahib?

The first Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib speaks, in Maru Raag, as under:-

ਅਰਬਦ ਨਰਬਦ ਧੁੰਧੂਕਾਰਾ॥ ਧਰਣਿ ਨ ਗਗਨਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ॥ ਨਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਨ ਚੰਦੁ ਨ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਲਗਾਇਦਾ॥1॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 1035)

ਅਰਥ: (ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸਮਾ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਦੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਅਰਬਦ ਨਰਬਦ (ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ, ਐਸੀ) ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਦੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਸੀ (ਭਾਵ, ਅਜੇਹੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਸੀ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਾਬਤ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਤਦੋਂ ਨਾਂਹ ਧਰਤੀ ਸੀ ਨਾਹ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਂਹ ਹੀ ਕਿਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਚੱਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਤਦੋਂ ਨਾਹ ਦਿਨ ਸੀ ਨਾਂਹ ਰਾਤ ਸੀ, ਨਾਂਹ ਚੰਦ ਸੀ ਨਾਂਹ ਸੂਰਜ ਸੀ। ਤਦੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਮਾਨੋ ਐਸੀ) ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾਈ ਬੈਠਾ ਸੀ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਸੇ ਕਿਸਮ ਦਾ ਫੁਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।1।
MARU, FIRST MEHL: For endless eons, there was only utter darkness. There was no earth or sky; there was only the infinite Command of His Hukam. There was no day or night, no moon or sun; God sat in primal, profound Samaadhi. || 1 ||

2. As per Guru Granth Sahib, how the universe was created?

The first Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib speaks, in Jap Baani, as under:-

ਕੀਤਾ ਪਸਾਉ ਏਕੋ ਕਵਾਉ॥ ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਲਖ ਦਰੀਆਉ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 3)
ਅਰਥ: ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਸ ਹੁਕਮ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਦਰੀਆ ਬਣ ਗਏ।
You created the vast expanse of the Universe with One Word! Hundreds of thousands of rivers began to flow.

3. As per Guru Granth Sahib, after creating universe, Akalpurakh created which thing?

The first Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib speaks, in Siri Raag, as under:-

ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਤੇ ਪਵਨਾ ਭਇਆ ਪਵਨੈ ਤੇ ਜਲੁ ਹੋਇ॥ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮੋਇ॥ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਨਾ ਥੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 19)
ਅਰਥ: (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ (ਸੂਖਮ ਤੱਤ) ਪਵਣ ਬਣਿਆ, ਪਵਣ ਤੋਂ ਜਲ ਹੋਂਦ ਵਿਚ ਆਇਆ, ਜਲ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਰਚਿਆ ਗਿਆ, (ਤੇ, ਇਸ ਰਚੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ) ਹਰੇਕ ਘਟ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।3।
From the True Lord came the air, and from the air came water. From water, He created the three worlds; in each and every heart He has infused His Light. The Immaculate Lord does not become polluted. Attuned to the Shabad, honor is obtained. || 3 ||

4. As per Guru Granth Sahib, after creating universe, where Akalpurakh kept himself?

The Fifth Guru Person, Guru Arjun Sahib, in Baani Sukhmani speaks as under:-

ਸਰਗੁਨ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਆਪਿ ॥ ਆਪਨ ਕੀਆ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਾਪਿ ।।੧॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 290)
ਅਰਥ: ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ (ਭਾਵ, ਆਕਾਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ) ਤ੍ਰਿਗੁਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਗਤ ਰੂਪ) ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਅਫੁਰ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ) ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।1।।
SHALOK: He possesses all qualities; He transcends all qualities; He is the Formless
Lord. He Himself is in Primal Samaadhi. Through His Creation, O Nanak, He meditates on Himself. || 1 ||

5. As per Guru Granth Sahib, when was the universe created?

Neither religious persons nor scientists can say definitely as to when the universe was created. All have their own ideas, which don’t match with each other. As per Gurbani, the creator only knows as to when the universe was created. In Jap Baani, the first Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib, speaks as under:-

ਕਵਣੁ ਸੁ ਵੇਲਾ ਵਖਤੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਕਵਣ ਥਿਤਿ ਕਵਣੁ ਵਾਰੁ ॥ ਕਵਣਿ ਸਿ ਰੁਤੀ ਮਾਹੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਹੋਆ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥ ( ਪੰਨਾ 4)
ਅਰਥ: ਕਿਹੜਾ ਉਹ ਵੇਲਾ ਤੇ ਵਕਤ ਸੀ, ਕਿਹੜੀ ਥਿਤ ਸੀ, ਕਿਹੜਾ ਦਿਨ ਸੀ, ਕਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਉਹ ਰੁੱਤਾਂ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਉਹ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਸੀ, ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਬਣਿਆ ਸੀ?
What was that day, and what was that date? What was that season,
and what was that month, when the Universe was created?

ਥਿਤਿ ਵਾਰੁ ਨਾ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਰੁਤਿ ਮਾਹੁ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ॥ ਜਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਿਰਠੀ ਕਉ ਸਾਜੇ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 4)
ਅਰਥ: (ਜਦੋਂ ਜਗਤ ਬਣਿਆ ਸੀ ਤਦੋਂ) ਕਿਹੜੀ ਥਿੱਤ ਸੀ, (ਕਿਹੜਾ) ਵਾਰ ਸੀ, ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਕੋਈ ਜੋਗੀ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ। ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ (ਦੱਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ) ਕਿ ਤਦੋਂ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਰੁੱਤ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਸੀ। ਜੋ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਜਗਤ ਕਦੋਂ ਰਚਿਆ)।
The day and the date are not known to the Yogis, nor is the month or the season. The Creator who created this creation—only He Himself knows.

6. As per Guru Granth Sahib, how the human body was created, after creation of universe?

The first Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib, speaks in Maru Raag as under:-

ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥ ਦੇਹ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਕਰਮ ਅਭਿਆਸਾ ॥ ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਦੁਇ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੀਖੇ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਜਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 1037)
ਅਰਥ: ਪੰਜਾਂ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਣਿਆ ਇਹ ਮਾਨੁਖੀ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪੇ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋਇਆ। ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਕਰਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਤੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਲਿਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਪਾਪ ਤੇ ਪੁੰਨ (ਦੇ ਬੀਜ) ਬੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਹੈ) ।14।
From the Primal Void, the five elements became manifest. They joined to form the body, which engages in actions. Both
bad and good are written on the forehead, the seeds of vice and virtue. || 14 ||

7. As per Guru Granth Sahib, can an end of Akalpurakh’s creation be found?

The Akalpurakh’s creation is infinite/limitless/boundless. The earths, suns, stars, skies, planets can’t be counted and no one can prepare an account of the creator’s creation. Only the Creator Himself knows about it. In Jap Baani it is stated as under:-

ਪਾਤਾਲਾ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਲਖ ਆਗਾਸਾ ਆਗਾਸ॥ ਓੜਕ ਓੜਕ ਭਾਲਿ ਥਕੇ ਵੇਦ ਕਹਨਿ ਇਕ ਵਾਤ॥ ਪੰਨਾ 5)
ਅਰਥ: (ਸਾਰੇ) ਵੇਦ ਇੱਕ = ਜ਼ਬਾਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, “ਪਾਤਾਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਹੋਰ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਹਨ, (ਬੇਅੰਤ ਰਿਸ਼ੀ ਮੁਨੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲੇ ਬੰਨਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਕਰਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਗਏ ਹਨ, (ਪਰ ਲੱਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੇ)।
There are nether worlds beneath nether worlds, and hundreds of thousands of heavenly worlds above. The Vedas say that you can search and search for them all, until you grow weary.

ਸਹਸ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਕਹਨਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਅਸੁਲੂ ਇਕੁ ਧਾਤੁ ॥ ਲੇਖਾ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਲੇਖੈ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 5)
ਅਰਥ: (ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਤੇ ਈਸਾਈ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀਆਂ ਚਾਰੇ) ਕਤੇਬਾਂ ਆਖਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, “ਕੁੱਲ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਆਲਮ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਇਕ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਹੈ”। (ਪਰ ਸੱਚੀ ਗੱਲ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਬਦ) ‘ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ’ ਤੇ ‘ਲੱਖਾਂ’ ਭੀ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਵਰਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ, ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਦਾ) ਲੇਖਾ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਲਿੱਖ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇ ਲੇਖਾ ਹੋ ਹੀ ਸਕੇ, (ਇਹ ਲੇਖਾ ਤਾਂ ਹੋ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, ਲੇਖਾ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ) ਲੇਖੇ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਮਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਗਿਣਤੀ ਦੇ ਹਿੰਦਸੇ ਹੀ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
The scriptures say that there are 18,000 worlds, but in reality, there is only One Universe. If you try to write an account of this, you will surely finish yourself before you finish writing it.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪੁ ॥੨੨॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 5)
ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੂੰ (ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਵੱਡਾ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ। 22।
O Nanak, call Him Great! He Himself knows Himself. || 22 ||

8. As per Guru Granth Sahib, what is the end of Akalpurakh’s creation?

The creation of the Creator (Nirgun) is His manifest (Sargun) form and will again merge with Him. In Maru Raag, the first Guru Person, Guru Nanak Sahib, speaks as under:-

ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਖਾਣੀ ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਸੁੰਨਹੁ ਉਪਜੀ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥ ਉਤਭੁਜੁ ਚਲਤੁ ਕੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਬਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਦੇਖਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 1037)
ਅਰਥ: ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪੇ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ-ਉਤਪੱਤੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਚਾਰ ਖਾਣੀਆਂ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਾਣੀਆਂ ਰਚਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਿਰੋਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪੇ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਪੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸਮਾ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਦਾ ਕੁਝ ਅਜੇਹਾ ਕੌਤਕ ਹੀ ਰਚਿਆ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਬਨਸਪਤੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਉੱਗ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਖਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।7।
From this Primal Void, came the four sources of creation, and the power of speech. They were created from the Void, and they will merge into the Void. The Supreme Creator created the play of Nature; through the Word of His Shabad, He stages His Wondrous Show. || 7 ||

The human being is the Supreme Creation of the Creator and has all His virtues. It is the duty of the Human being to understand and accept His Laws of Universal Order and live life as per Divine Law.

The human being/Sikh needs to get rid of vices, become a righteous/ virtuous person (Gurmukh) and become one with Akalpurakh and Shabad Guru, who are spiritual embodiment of each other so as to reach the stage of spiritual equipoise and spiritual bliss. The final goal is to achieve this goal of spiritual emancipation/salvation in this life itself.
