My mother told me that I should not go to the Gurdwara during my monthly cycle. I would like to know if this is true. Are women allowed to visit the Gurdwara during this time?

In response to your question, the undersigned wants to say that the women having monthly cycle is a natural process and doesn’t make them impure (ਜੂਠਾ).

Gurbani teaches us that those, who are liars (ਝੂਠੇ), are impure (ਜੂਠੇ), all the time, and by just washing their bodies, they can’t become pure (ਸੁੱਚੇ). Only those persons are pure (ਸੁੱਚੇ), in whose mind (ਮਨ) the Akalpurakh is an inhabitant (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ/ਅਕਾਲਪੁਰਖ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ), all the time.

Therefore, there is no problem, in your going to Gurdwara Sahib, during these days.

ਮਃ ੧ ॥ ਜਿਉ ਜੋਰੂ ਸਿਰਨਾਵਣੀ ਆਵੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥ ਜੂਠੇ ਜੂਠਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥ ਸੂਚੇ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਬਹਨਿ ਜਿ ਪਿੰਡਾ ਧੋਇ ॥ ਸੂਚੇ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 472}

ਪਦ ਅਰਥ: ਜੋਰੂ = ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ। ਸਿਰਨਾਵਣੀ = ਨ੍ਹਾਉਣੀ, ਮਾਹਵਾਰੀ ਖ਼ੂਨ। ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ = ਹਰ ਮਹੀਨੇ, ਸਦਾ। ਜੂਠੇ = ਝੂਠੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ। ਜੂਠਾ = ਝੂਠਾ। ਏਹਿ = ਅਜੇਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ। ਸੂਚੇ = ਸੁੱਚੇ, ਪਵਿੱਤਰ। ਆਖੀਅਹਿ = ਆਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਜਿ = ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ। ਸੋਈ = ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ। ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ = ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ। ਸੋਇ = ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ।2।

ਅਰਥ: ਜਿਵੇਂ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਹਰ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਨ੍ਹਾਉਣੀ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਇਹ ਅਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ) , ਤਿਵੇਂ ਝੂਠੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਝੂਠ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਜੇਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਜੋ ਨਿਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਧੋ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਬਣ ਕੇ) ਬੈਠ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।2।

FIRST MEHL: As a woman has her periods, month after month, so does falsehood dwell in the mouth of the false; they suffer forever, again and again. They are not called pure, who sit down after merely washing their bodies. Only they are pure, O Nanak, within whose minds the Lord abides. || 2 ||
