      Respected Prince ji,
      Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh!

      In response to your question, the undersigned wants to say that there is no ceremony called ‘baptism’ in Sikhi. It is taking ‘Pahul’ from Five Beloved Ones (ਪੰਜ ਪਿਆਰਿਆਂ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਪਾਹੁਲ ਲੈਣਾ), which is termed as ‘Amrit Sanskar’ in ‘Sikh Rehat Maryada’ (ਸਿੱਖ ਰਹਿਤ ਮਰਿਯਾਦਾ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ).

      One can maintain Sikhi appearance (Saroop) throughout life and not take Pahul because it is a matter of choice.

      Now coming to the question why it is necessary to take Pahul?

      The practice of giving Pahul was started by Tenth Guru Person, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib, on the Vaisakhi day of 1699, to prepare a disciplined force of ‘Sant Sipahis (ਸੰਤ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ)’, so as to fight against all kind of oppression/tyranny/persecution/atrocity/cruelty.This disciplined force of Sant Sipahis came to be known as Khalsa i.e. Akalpurakh’s own, who rose above the fright of death and fought all kind of oppression/tyranny/persecution/atrocity/cruelty in the past and continue to do so.

      The Sikh, who is a ‘seeker of truth’ and is a student, becomes complete only by having ‘Baani’ as also ‘Baana’. In the absence of any one, he is incomplete.

      Therefore, the Sikh has to imbibe the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib, on one hand and on the other hand has to rise above the fright of death, take Pahul and become a Khalsa i.e. Akalpurakh’s own. Perhaps, you would be aware that Khalsa is a Persian word, which means King’s own land.

      Once the Sikh becomes a Khalsa i.e. Akalpurakh’s own then he will be expected, not to do anything which will lead to his spiritual death. In other words, the Sikh has to live a disciplined life, as per the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib.

      So, as understood by the undersigned, as per the Gurbani, not dying a spiritual death is what the immortality is. This is what the Sahibzadas and other martyrs achieved, by laying down their lives but by not dying spiritual death. Therefore, they became immortal for all times to come (ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਅਮਰ‌ ਹੋ ਗਏ).

      Now it is upto a person to maintain a Sikhi appearance (Saroop) and remain like that throughout life (i.e. remain incomplete) or take Pahul, become a Khalsa, live a disciplined life, get rid of vices, become a righteous/virtuous person, remain one with Akalpurakh and Shabad Guru, who are spiritually embodiment of each other, achieve the stage of spiritual equipoise (ਆਤਮਿਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ) and spiritual bliss (ਆਤਮਿਕ ਆਨੰਦ)and finally achieve emancipation/ salvation in this life itself (ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ).

      Hope it helps. If you have any further questions, please do ask. If you find any deficiencies, please point out the same, for improvement in future.

      Regards,
      Your Brother

        Respected Kulwinder Singh ji, we can comprehend your elaboration of Sikhi as the elevation of our MANN (mind) :
        Stage 1. Sikh – a person influenced by the teachings/ history/ culture / art of living a blissful life by our great Guru through Gurbani, decides to learn and follow that path, is said to be a Sikh of Guru. We can equate it to as admission in school of Sikhi.
        Stage 2. Singh – besides learning the art of living a blissful life from my Guru by how to get rid of vices, assimilate godly virtues in my inner personality and practise these qualties in my everyday life, when I come to know that God is a perfect creator, His creation is also perfect, I am not to distort even minute part of my body i.e not to remove even a single hair from my body, then I become a Singh. I am firm in following the basic doctrines of 1 Naam japna- for my inner personality development 2- Kirat Karo- for my economic needs and 3 Vand Shako – for helping the person in need. I can equate this stage of my mind as passing the degree level of my study.
        Stage 3 Khalsa- When I pledge not to deviate in any circumstances the path selected as a Singh,and have a will power to fight the oppressors/ forces doing injustice to the society, I am Khalsa. (sant-sipahi). We can equate this state of mind as having passed Postgraduate/ doctorate level. Only this state of our mind can provide long lasting equality, universal brotherhood and well of all in the society. This form of society was visualised by our great gurus.

          ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਯੋਗ ਵੀਰ ਕਰਨੈਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ,
          ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਕੀ ਫ਼ਤਹਿ।।

          ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਦਾਸ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ! ਸਾਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਹੈ। ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ:-

          ਮਨ ਸਮਝਾਵਨ ਕਾਰਨੇ ਕਛੂਅਕ ਪੜੀਐ ਗਿਆਨ ॥੫॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 340}

          ਅਰਥ: (ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਟਾ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਲਈ) ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ (ਉੱਚੀ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਪੜ੍ਹਨੀ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ।

          ਇਸ ਲਈ ਸਿੱਖ ਲਈ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਬਾਣੀ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ। ਪਰ ਬਾਣਾ ਵੀ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ। ਪਾਹੁਲ ਲੈਣਾ ਤੇ ਪੰਜ ਕਕਾਰ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਬਣਨਾ, ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਲੋਂ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਨੁਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਹੀ ਤਾਂ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਭਾਉਣਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਚਿਆਰ ਤੇ ਗੁਣਵਾਨ ਬਣ ਕੇ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਮ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਪਰ ਉੱਠ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਮੌਤ ਨਾਂਹ ਹੋਵੇ।

          ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਅਕਾਲਪੁਰਖ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਗੁਰੂ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਇੱਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਰੂਪ ਹਨ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੇਗਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਦੀ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚੇਗਾ ਤੇ ਇਸੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਿਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।

          ਆਦਰ ਸਹਿਤ,
          ਆਪ ਦਾ ਵੀਰ

              ਵੀਰ ਜੀ, ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ ‘ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ’ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਾਰ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਬਦ/ਨਾਮ (ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੇ ਅਕਾਲਪੁਰਖ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਗੁਰੂ, ਜੋ ਇੱਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹਨ, ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਹਰ ਸਮੇਂ ਪੀਣਾ ਹੈ। ਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ:-

              ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਬਦੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥੪੧॥੯੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 393}

              ਅਰਥ: ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੁਣ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਹੀਰੇ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਹਨ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਭਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਥੁੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਲ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।2। 41। 92।
