ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਚ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਕਿਉਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ? ਸਰੋਵਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੀ ਮੰਤਵ ਹੈ? Why does Gurdwara Sahib have a Sarowar? What is the purpose of having Isnaan in the Sarowar?

                During the period of Guru Sahib, the purpose of building a Sarovar with each Dharamsal was to meet the requirements of water in that area. The upper caste did not allow the lower caste people to draw water from their wells. Building common Sarovar also solves the problem of disparity among the high and low automatically. Sarovars were built not only for bathing but also for all kinds of needs.

             ਅੱਜਕਲ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਹੋਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਾਧਨ ਬਣ ਗਏ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਸਿਰਫ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਵਿਚ ਠੰਡਕ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨੀ ਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਹੱਦ ਤਕ ਸਾਂਝੀਆਂ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੂਰਤੀ ਤਕ ਹੀ ਰਹਿ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਭਾਂਵੇ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝੀਵਾਲਤਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰੰਤੂ ਇਹ ਧਿਆਨ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਣਾਂ ਹੈ, ਕਿ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਪਾਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਧੋਤੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਸ ਲਈ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਰੂਪੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ।

                Now-a-days many other sources of water have been developed. Hence, the need for Sarovar is only confined to provide cooling in that area and to some extent fulfil the common requirements. Although bathing in the Sarovar creates communion, but it is important to keep in mind that bathing in the Sarovar cannot wash away any sins. For that the Sikh has to take a bath in the knowledge provided by Gurbani.

 ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰੋਵਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਮਜਨੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਾ ॥ (੨੫੦)

           ਸਿੱਖ ਲਈ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਹੀ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਹੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦਾ ਸਰੋਵਰੁ ਹੈ, ਸਬਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਸੋਮਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਫਲ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ।

                For a Sikh, Gurbani is the pilgrimage, Gurbani is the reservoir of Amrit, Shabad Guru is the source of wisdom, in which one has to bathe and make one’s life successful.

 ਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਮਾਨ ਸਰੋਵਰੁ ਹੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਲਹੰਨਿੑ ॥ ਸੇਵਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿਆ ਸੇ ਹੰਸੁਲੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਹੰਨਿ ॥੨॥ (੭੫੭)

           ਸਿੱਖ ਲਈ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਮਾਨ ਸਰੋਵਰੁ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਹੰਸ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਖੋਜ ਕੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰੂਪੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਖੋਜਣਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੁਧੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨੀ ਹੈ।

                For a Sikh, the Guru is the Man Sarovar, in which the privileged ones search like Swan and enjoy the Amrit Naam of Akal Purakh. Therefore, a Sikh has to discover the truth with the help of Gurbani and acquire complete knowledge and good judgment.
